Airbus, the global aerospace leader, is taking a significant step toward data sovereignty by migrating critical applications from Amazon Web Services (AWS) to a French cloud infrastructure. The move signals a growing trend among European companies to reduce reliance on U.S. cloud providers, particularly in light of increasing concerns over data security and geopolitical risks.
The French cloud provider Scaleway has been selected to host these vital systems, which are essential for Airbus to maintain operations as a minimum viable company. Scaleway, a subsidiary of the French tech group OVHcloud, is positioning itself as a key player in Europe's sovereign cloud initiative. The company confirmed the partnership and emphasized its commitment to supporting Airbus’s digital transformation efforts.
While the migration will initially cover around 70 applications, the plan is to gradually expand to approximately 900 critical systems. This strategic shift is part of a broader push by European organizations to ensure data resilience, compliance with EU regulations, and greater control over sensitive information. Airbus’s decision aligns with the EU’s broader ambitions to develop a more independent and secure digital infrastructure, especially amid ongoing tensions in global tech supply chains.
The move also reflects a growing recognition that relying heavily on U.S.-based platforms can pose risks in terms of data access, regulatory compliance, and national security. By choosing Scaleway, Airbus is not only bolstering its own cybersecurity posture but also supporting the growth of a domestic cloud ecosystem in Europe.
