Anthropic launches Cowork, a Claude Desktop agent that works in your files — no coding required

Anthropic has unveiled Cowork, a new desktop AI agent designed to bring the capabilities of its popular Claude Code tool to non-technical users. The feature, currently in a research preview, is available exclusively to Claude Max subscribers through the macOS desktop app. It allows users to delegate tasks like organizing files, generating expense reports, or creating documents directly to Claude, all without requiring any coding knowledge.

From Developer Tool to Consumer Agent

The inspiration for Cowork came from the unexpected adoption of Claude Code by non-developers. Users were employing the terminal-based coding tool for a wide range of tasks, from summarizing documents to automating workflows. Recognizing this trend, Anthropic has now abstracted the agentic capabilities of Claude Code into a more user-friendly interface.

Notably, the development of Cowork may have been significantly accelerated — or even partially completed — by Claude Code itself. Some reports suggest that Claude Code contributed to building its own non-technical sibling, marking a rare and powerful example of AI systems improving themselves.

Security and Safety Considerations

With its ability to manipulate files and interact with external systems, Cowork introduces new safety concerns. Anthropic has emphasized the importance of clear instructions and has built-in safeguards such as virtual machine isolation and prompt injection defenses. However, the company is upfront about the risks, warning users that Claude could potentially delete files or act maliciously if misdirected.

Integration and Expansion

Cowork integrates with Anthropic’s existing suite of data connectors, allowing access to services like Notion, Asana, and PayPal. It also supports browser automation through its integration with Claude in Chrome, enabling tasks that require web interaction. The agent is also equipped with a set of specialized skills tailored for document creation and presentation building.

Although currently limited to macOS, Anthropic has indicated that it plans to expand to Windows and other platforms. The company is also working on cross-device syncing and enhancing the overall user experience based on feedback from the research preview.

Setting the Stage for AI Agents

Cowork represents a strategic move by Anthropic to challenge Microsoft’s Copilot, which has struggled to gain widespread adoption on the desktop. Unlike Copilot’s OS-level integration, Cowork operates within a sandboxed environment, balancing utility with security.

As AI agents become more capable and autonomous, the question of trust and workflow integration becomes increasingly critical. Cowork is not just a new feature — it's a step toward making AI feel less like a tool and more like a collaborative colleague.
