BMW has unveiled a significant refresh of its luxury electric sedan, the 2027 i7, at both Grand Central Terminal in New York and the Auto China trade show. The new model is set to redefine performance and efficiency with a host of cutting-edge technologies, including battery cells from Rimac, rare-earth-free motors, and a boost in charging capabilities.
Advanced Battery and Charging Tech
The heart of the new i7 lies in its Gen6 cylindrical battery cells supplied by Rimac, a company known for its high-performance electric vehicle components. These cells are expected to deliver enhanced energy density and improved longevity. BMW also announced that the vehicle will support a 250 kW charging rate, a notable jump from previous models, enabling faster recharging times for owners.
Efficiency and Range Improvements
With the new powertrain, BMW claims the i7 60 xDrive model will achieve over 350 miles EPA range, while the i7 50 reaches 611 km and the M70 targets 686 km. These figures reflect BMW’s push toward maximizing range without compromising on performance. Additionally, the i7 now features rare-earth-free motors paired with silicon carbide (SiC) inverters, a move that enhances efficiency and reduces reliance on scarce materials.
Level 3 Driving Automation Dropped
Notably, BMW has decided to remove Level 3 driving automation from the i7 lineup, a shift that may reflect regulatory hesitancy or a strategic pivot toward more conservative autonomous driving features. While this could be a disappointment for some, it aligns with broader industry trends where manufacturers are taking a cautious approach to deploying Level 3 systems amid ongoing safety and legal concerns.
