The dispute centers on Buckmaster’s work involving the Navier-Stokes equations, a set of partial differential equations that describe fluid dynamics and have long been a challenge in mathematics.
Buckmaster claims that after information about his AI-assisted progress reached OpenAI, a researcher from the company tried to remove his co-author, who is affiliated with Anthropic, a rival AI lab. According to Buckmaster, the OpenAI researcher threatened him when he refused to comply. The situation escalated when OpenAI later claimed its own breakthrough using a similar solution path, raising questions about the origins of the work.
Buckmaster had uploaded his drafts to Codex, OpenAI’s AI coding assistant, and when he inquired about how the model handled user data, he says he was told it didn’t look up user information. However, when he asked about the model’s training data, he received no response. OpenAI has denied the allegations, leaving the matter in question.
