Munich startup tozero has launched Europe’s first industrial battery recycling plant, processing 1,500 tonnes of battery waste annually and producing high-purity lithium carbonate at a cost twice as competitive as traditional mining.

In a significant step toward sustainable energy infrastructure, Munich-based startup tozero has launched Europe’s first industrial-scale battery recycling plant. Located at the Chemical Park Gendorf in Bavaria, the facility serves as a demo plant, processing 1,500 tonnes of battery waste annually and extracting 100 tonnes of high-purity lithium carbonate. The company claims its process achieves costs that are twice as competitive as those of traditional lithium mining operations.

Driving Circular Economy in Energy Storage

The move underscores Europe's growing commitment to closing the loop in the battery lifecycle, especially as electric vehicle adoption surges. With lithium-ion batteries reaching the end of their useful life, the need for efficient recycling has become critical. tozero’s technology not only recovers valuable materials but also minimizes environmental impact by reducing reliance on virgin resource extraction.

Scaling for the Future

While the demo plant is a promising start, tozero has ambitious plans for expansion. A full-scale facility is scheduled to come online by 2030, with a capacity of 45,000 tonnes of battery waste processed annually. This leap in capacity will significantly boost Europe’s ability to manage its growing stockpile of end-of-life batteries and support the continent’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

The development is particularly timely as European regulators and automakers alike intensify efforts to decarbonize transportation and energy storage. tozero’s breakthrough could help Europe reduce its dependence on lithium imports, particularly from regions with less stringent environmental standards.

With this innovation, tozero is not just reshaping the battery recycling industry—it's paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
